Shamans

It's a term, "Shaman", that we hear almost everywhere. We may feel like we know what we're talking about...and yet...everyone has their own specialty(s) and shamanic roles and practices vary greatly from culture to culture, reflecting the diversity of beliefs and traditions across the world for millennia.

This term "shaman" has origins in Siberian languages, particularly Tungusic, which is spoken by the people of Siberia and Mongolia. The word " šamán " in Tungusic refers to a spiritual individual who has the ability to communicate with spirits, heal, and act as an intermediary between the visible and invisible world.

The Russian anthropologist Émile V. Bois-Reymond is often credited with introducing the word "shaman" into Western literature in the early 17th century, although the term's use and popularization increased in the 19th century through the work of researchers like the Russian folklorist Vasily Radlov .

The word "shaman" has become widespread in the Western anthropological context to describe spiritual practitioners and healers in many indigenous cultures, particularly in Siberia, Central Asia, North America, and South America. It is important to note that the term "shaman" can be seen as a Western simplification, and each culture has its own specific terms and traditions to describe these spiritual practitioners. In South America, for example, the shaman does not have the status that one might think of in the West: he is a man endowed with abilities who is at the service of the community to provide care, solve problems, project himself in the environment... Far from the individual status close to "guru" that is commonly granted to him.

It is also interesting to identify the possible roles, there are 8 of them:

  • Healing Shaman: These shamans primarily focus on physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. They often use rituals, medicinal herbs, and energy healing techniques to treat illnesses.

  • Divinatory Shaman: These shamans specialize in divination, seeking information about the future, answering specific questions, or guiding choices. They can use various tools such as maps, bones, or observing natural signs.

  • Ancestral Shaman: Ancestral shamans connect with the spirits of ancestors to obtain guidance, protection, and blessings for the community. They can facilitate communication between the living and the deceased.

  • Psychopomp Shaman: These shamans guide the souls of the deceased to the afterlife. They facilitate the passage of souls and ensure that they reach their spiritual destination safely.

  • Nature Shaman: Nature shamans connect to the spirits of the earth, plants, and animals. They often work to restore ecological balance and promote respect for nature.

  • Celestial Shaman: These shamans work with the celestial forces, the stars, and the spirits of the sky. They may be involved in practices related to astrology, spiritual meteorology, or communication with celestial entities.

  • Social Shaman: These shamans focus on well-being and harmony within the community. They can be involved in conflict resolution, the celebration of social rites, and the preservation of social balance.

  • Initiator Shaman: Initiator shamans are involved in rites of passage and initiations. They guide individuals through important life transitions, marking milestones such as birth, puberty, marriage, and death.

Thus, the choice of a shaman is not as simple as it seems at first glance... Several recommendations can support you in this delicate search, keeping in mind that confidence and a feeling of choice are two key elements, a a bit like choosing a mountain guide...

  1. Seek Referrals: Ask for recommendations from friends, members of your local community, or others engaged in similar spiritual practices. Personal references can be valuable in establishing an initial list of potential shamans.

  2. Do some Research: Explore the online reputation of the shamans you are considering meeting. Look for reviews, testimonials, or experiences shared by other people. However, keep in mind that not all information online is always reliable.

  3. Consult Recognized Organizations: Some shamans may be members of recognized organizations or associations in their field. Consult these resources to identify practitioners who have received formal training or who follow specific ethical codes.

  4. Meet Them Personally: Before committing to a session, try to meet the shaman in person. Ask questions about their training, practices, and past experiences. This will give you an idea of his personality and philosophy.

  5. Be Clear About Your Expectations: Before starting a session, make sure you have a clear understanding of your expectations and the goals you want to achieve. Discuss this openly with the shaman to ensure your intentions are understood.

  6. Listen to Your Instinct: When meeting with the shaman, listen to your instinct and gauge your comfort level. Mutual trust is crucial in this type of relationship, so if something doesn't feel right, explore other options.

  7. Ethics and Transparency: Choose a shaman who practices ethically and transparently. They should be willing to discuss their rates, their working methods , and answer any questions you have about the session.

  8. Respect for Local Cultures: If you are looking for a shaman in a specific culture, make sure the practitioner respects and understands the cultural traditions appropriately. Respect for the original culture is crucial in shamanic practice.
